REPORT TO BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE

SUBJECT

Title

Santa Clara Bicycle Map Update (He)

Report

BACKGROUND

In August 2023, Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) Member Megas requested BPAC discuss an Update to the Santa Clara Bicycle Map (Attachment 1).

DISCUSSION

Santa Clara Bicycle Map Update

In June 2023, City staff provided updates to the existing bicycle network within Santa Clara since 2018 to Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) to include into their Countywide Bicycle Map update. On January 19, 2024, VTA published the countywide bicycle network file on their website Santa Clara County Bikeways 2023 | Santa Clara County Bikeways 2023 | SCVTA Open Data Site <https://data.vta.org/datasets/5225512662264bc6a4ee369e4b3823dc_0/explore>.

Since February 2024, Traffic Engineering staff has been working with the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) staff to update the Santa Clara Bicycle Map and place it online. The draft updated bicycle network map (Attachment 2) will be shared with BPAC for review and revision. After the bicycle map is finalized, staff will share an electronic link with BPAC to access the map on the City’s website. Based on funding availability, staff is looking to make printed copies of the updated map available to the public. Staff will also work on adding educational information about bicycling on the back of the bicycle map.

Trail network signs

Member Megas also asked if the City’s bicycle map can be placed at the entrance to the City’s trail network. Based on staff’s research, the maps along the trail network are maintained and updated separately from the City’s bicycle map.
