BACKGROUND
National Day of Korea, also known as National Foundation Day, is a holiday celebrated by Koreans in honor of the founding of the first Korean State of Gojoseon in 2333 B.C.E. and is widely regarded as the founding of the Korean people. National Day of Korea was traditionally observed on the 3rd day of 10th month of the lunar calendar; however, it has been celebrated annually on October 3rd of the solar Gregorian calendar since 1949.
DISCUSSION
The City of Santa Clara is proud to have a large Korean population and to have established a Friendship City relationship with the City of Icheon, Republic of Korea in July of 2019. The members of the Korean community are vibrant and valuable members of Santa Clara community, who bring their rich history, cultural diversity, and significant contributions to our City.
At the September 29, 2020 City Council meeting, the City Council will recognize October 3, 2020 as National Day of Korea with a Certificate of Special Mayoral Recognition (attached) in honor of this auspicious occasion.
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW
This is an information report only and no action is being taken by the City Council; no environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act ("CEQA") is required.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no fiscal impact to the City other than staff time.
