Proclamation for the Celebration of Diwali in the City of Santa Clara
Report
BACKGROUND
Diwali, also known as the “Festival of Lights,” is celebrated by more than one billion people worldwide and symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. The festival holds profound religious, cultural, and historical significance for Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, bringing communities together in a spirit of unity, reflection, and celebration.
Central to the observance of Diwali are the principles of dana (charitable giving) and seva (selfless service), which emphasize compassion, generosity, and service to others. These traditions encourage individuals and communities to share the light of wisdom, knowledge, and kindness while helping alleviate suffering caused by hunger, illness, poverty, and other hardships.
In 2026, Diwali will be observed on November 8, in accordance with the lunar calendar, bringing together families, friends, and communities across the United States and around the world to celebrate cultural traditions, strengthen community bonds, and embrace the values of goodwill, peace, hope, and renewal.
Since 2007, the United States Congress has adopted resolutions recognizing the religious and historical significance of Diwali. Further reflecting the festival's cultural importance, California became the third state in the nation to establish Diwali as an official state holiday, effective January 1, 2026, recognizing the contributions and traditions of the communities that celebrate this occasion.
