REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

Presentation of 2018 City of Santa Clara/Silicon Valley Power Scholarships

Report

BACKGROUND

As part of the first Council Principles and Priorities, Council implemented a program called the “City of Santa Clara/Silicon Valley Power Scholarship Program,” which was designed to provide tuition and technical grants and an internship to students with a goal of entering a field related to energy services, public power, and/or the power industry.  On May 16, 2006, the first of these scholarships were awarded.  To qualify, a student must be a resident of, or go to school in, Santa Clara.  Course work must be taken at an accredited two- or four-year college or university, or at a technical school that is fully licensed or accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  Applicants are evaluated by members of the local academic and business community on various criteria, including academic achievements, community involvement, and artistic or athletic achievements.  Since its inception, 45 students have participated in the Scholarship/Technical Grant Program.  Including this year’s recipients, a total of $207,000 has been awarded in scholarship/grant funds.

DISCUSSION

Chief Electric Utility Officer, John Roukema, will present the 2018 City of Santa Clara/Silicon Valley Power Scholarship Awards in the amount of $5,000 to each recipient.  Ismael Laymoun has been attending Mission College and anticipates attending UC Berkeley to pursue a degree in Energy Engineering.  Rafael Tolosa is a recent graduate from Wilcox High School with plans to attend UC Berkeley to pursue a degree in Economics and Finance.  James Wang is attending Santa Clara University with a double major of Electrical Engineering and Environmental Science.

FISCAL IMPACT

There is no fiscal impact to the General Fund.  Silicon Valley Power sets aside funds for these scholarships in the department’s annual operations budget.
