REPORT TO COUNCIL
SUBJECT
Title
Proclamation of December 2025 as Human Rights Month
Report
BACKGROUND
December is National Human Rights Month (also known as Universal Human Rights Month) in the United States, designated to recognize and promote the fundamental rights and freedoms of all people. The month commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948.
DISCUSSION
Human Rights Month is a global observance dedicated to promoting and celebrating the fundamental rights and freedoms that all individuals are entitled to, regardless of their nationality, gender, race, religion, or background. It serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding human rights and addressing issues related to social justice and equality.
The 2025 theme for Human Rights Day and Month is "Our Everyday Essentials," focuses on how human rights are fundamental to daily life. The campaign aims to show that human rights are not abstract concepts but are the everyday essentials everyone relies on and can be a positive force for good.
This theme also highlights how human rights, such as the right to life, liberty, and dignity, are integrated into our daily lives. It encourages people to share their "everyday essentials" and show how human rights shape their lives by using the hashtag #OurEverydayRights.
The City of Santa Clara’s Cultural Commission will be sharing a 5-minute video that was created to commemorate the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations.
