REPORT TO COUNCIL
SUBJECT
Title
Proclamation of June 2025 as Pride Month in the City of Santa Clara
Report
BACKGROUND
The origins of Pride Month begin in June 1969, when protestors stood their ground against police raids on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, over a period of six days. The Stonewall Uprising sparked the gay rights movement and changed the United States forever.
The first Pride marches were held in June 1970, one year after the riots, to mark the anniversary and demonstrate for equal rights. President Bill Clinton officially declared June "Gay and Lesbian Pride Month" in 1999, and President Barack Obama later expanded it to "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month" recognizing the broader LGBTQ+ community.
Pride Month is a time to honor a movement that has grown stronger and more inclusive with each year and to celebrate the generations of LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual) people who have fought to live openly and authentically. It is also a reminder of the work that is still needed to ensure that LGBTQIA+ people can live free from discrimination.
In June 2017, the City of Santa Clara flew the Pride rainbow flag for the first time in the City's history. In May 2019, the City Council adopted Resolution 19-8705 authorizing the annual display of the Pride rainbow flag during the month of June (Attachment 2).
