SUBJECT

Title

Presentation from Caltrain

Report

BACKGROUND

Caltrain is a regional commuter rail service that provides passenger transportation along the San Francisco Peninsula, connecting San Francisco, San Mateo County, and Santa Clara County. Governed by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Caltrain serves as a key component of the Bay Area’s multimodal transportation network, offering rail service for commuters and other travelers while coordinating with local and regional transit partners. In addition to operating passenger rail service, Caltrain is responsible for corridor planning, capital improvements, station access enhancements, and major infrastructure investments designed to improve safety, reliability, system capacity, and sustainability along the Peninsula rail corridor.

DISCUSSION

Caltrain Director of Government Relations and Community Affairs Jason Baker will provide an overview of Caltrain’s structural budget deficit and the significant service impacts associated with a “no external funding” scenario, which could directly affect residents and commuters throughout the region, including within the City of Santa Clara.

ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW

This is an information report only and no action is being taken by the City Council and no environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act (“CEQA”) is required.

FISCAL IMPACT

There is no fiscal impact.
