REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

Proclamation of March as Youth Art Month

Report

BACKGROUND

In 1961, the Art & Creative Materials Institute, Inc. developed Children’s Art Month to recognize the importance of art education for development and critical thinking, expand art programs in schools, and increase community support and understanding for art education. In 1969, the celebration expanded to include secondary school students, becoming Youth Art Month.

Since then, Youth Art Month continues to be an annual celebration supported through the Council for Art Education to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for school art programs. Youth Art Month provides a forum for acknowledging skills that are fostered through experience in the visual arts and encourages commitment to the arts.

DISCUSSION

At the March 19, 2024 City Council meeting, the City Council will proclaim March 2024 as representatives from the Santa Clara County Office of Education will accept the proclamation for Youth Art Month.
