REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

Proclamation of June 2024 as Pride Month in the City of Santa Clara

Report

BACKGROUND

The origins of Pride Month begin in June 1969, when protestors stood their ground against police raids on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, over a period of six days. The Stonewall Uprising sparked the gay rights movement and changed the United States forever.

Pride Month is a time to honor a movement that has grown stronger and more inclusive with each year and to celebrate the generations of LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual) people who have fought to live openly and authentically. It is also a reminder of the work that is still needed to ensure that LGBTQIA+ people can live free from discrimination.

In June 2017, the City of Santa Clara flew the Pride rainbow flag for the first time in the City's history. In May 2019, the City Council adopted Resolution 19-8705 authorizing the annual display of the Pride rainbow flag during the month of June (Attachment 2).

DISCUSSION

At the June 4, 2024 City Council meeting, the City Council will proclaim June 2024 as Pride Month in the City of Santa Clara. Representatives from the Santa Clara University Office of Multicultural Learning, which includes the Rainbow Resource Center, will be present to accept the proclamation. The Rainbow Resource Center educates, empowers, and celebrates the experiences and identities of the LGBTQIA+ community at Santa Clara University.

On June 7, 2024, the City will host a Pride Flag Raising Ceremony at 12 p.m. in the Santa Clara City Hall Quad Area. The flag will fly through the month as part of the City’s celebration of Pride Month.
