REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

Proclamation of Divorce with Respect Week from March 3, 2025 to March 9, 2025

Report

BACKGROUND

Divorce with Respect Week was originated in California in 2021 by Collaborative Practice California. As a nonprofit association, Collaborative Practice California consists of legal, financial, and mental health professionals who specialize in supporting individuals to navigate through divorce and the dissolution of their marriage.

Divorce with Respect Week brings awareness about collaborative divorce or mediation as alternative to traditional litigation. Collaborative divorce is an amicable approach that focuses on the needs of the family. These no-court options are meant to focus on the goals to reach a resolution that benefits all involved. Since 2007, the State of California has recognized the Collaborative Law Process in the Family Law Code, Section 2013, as an alternative to adversarial judicial intervention. As part of Divorce with Respect Week, members of Collaborative Practice California will offer free consultations to California residents through the week of March 3 through 9, 2025.

DISCUSSION

At the February 25, 2025 City Council meeting, the City of Santa Clara will proclaim Divorce with Respect Week from March 3 through March 9, 2025. Melisa Lenon, Vice President of Collaborative Practice Silicon Valley, will accept the proclamation for Divorce with Respect Week.
