REPORT TO COUNCIL
SUBJECT
Title
Proclamation of May 2026 as Jewish American Heritage Month
Report
BACKGROUND
In recognition of the enduring contributions of Jewish Americans to the cultural, civic, economic, and social fabric of the United States, President George W. Bush first proclaimed Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) on April 20, 2006, through the collaborative efforts of Senator Arlen Specter, the Jewish Museum of Florida, and the South Florida Jewish community.
In 2020, the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia helped reposition Jewish American Heritage Month as a nationwide celebration held each May to honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of Jewish Americans; educate diverse communities about Jewish heritage and traditions; and inspire meaningful conversations about the American Jewish experience, both past and present.
May was selected for Jewish American Heritage Month in recognition of the historic 350th anniversary of Jewish life in America, commemorating the arrival of the first Jewish settlers in New Amsterdam, now known as New York City.
DISCUSSION
Each May, hundreds of organizations and Americans of all backgrounds come together to discover, explore, and celebrate the vibrant and diverse American Jewish experience from the founding of our nation to the present day.
Jane Faershtein and Moshe Gat from the Bay Area Jewish Coalition will be present to receive the Proclamation.
The Bay Area Jewish Coalition (BAJC) is a grassroots organization dedicated to ensuring that Jewish and Israeli Americans can thrive and live safely throughout the Bay Area.
Formed in the wake of the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack in Israel, BAJC works to address the alarming rise in antisemitism through impactful, community-driven solutions and advocacy efforts.
BAJC believes in the power of unity and collaboration, working closely with Jewish organizations, community leaders, schools, colleges, and local governments throughout the region. The organization serves as “boots on the ground” support for Jewish families experiencing antisemitism and advocates for the safety, inclusion, and well-being of the Jewish community.
