REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

Proclamation of October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Report

BACKGROUND

In October 1981, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence observed the first Day of Unity as part of its efforts to end domestic violence in the United States and unite advocates working to support survivors and prevent abuse. In 1989, Congress formally designated October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, establishing a national observance dedicated to increasing awareness, supporting survivors, and promoting efforts to prevent domestic violence.

Each October, cities and communities across the nation come together to uplift the voices and experiences of survivors and reaffirm their commitment to ending domestic violence. Domestic violence is a serious and potentially life-threatening issue that affects millions of individuals across the United States, regardless of age, economic status, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability, or education level. The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides free, confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

This year’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month theme, “#Every1KnowsSome1,” highlights the widespread impact of domestic violence and reminds us that it can affect anyone in our families, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities. The campaign encourages greater awareness, support for survivors, and a shared commitment to preventing domestic violence and fostering safe and healthy communities.
