REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

Proclaim September 16, 2023, as Mahsa Amini Day

Report

BACKGROUND

On September 16, 2022, in Iran, Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman, died in police custody after having been arrested on the basis of inadequate head covering. The City of Santa Clara received requests from several Santa Clara residents and community members to name September 16, 2023 as Mahsa Amini Day.

On November 13, 2012, the City of Santa Clara adopted Ordinance No. 1899 to protect and safeguard the right and opportunity of all persons to be free from all forms of discrimination, including discrimination based on age, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, disability, marital status, sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation. The City of Santa Clara recognizes Mahsa Amini Day as a tribute to Mahsa Amini’s courage and the countless women around the world who have suffered gender injustice and continue to advocate for their fundamental human rights and freedom.

DISCUSSION

The City of Santa Clara will officially proclaim September 16, 2023, as Mahsa Amini Day.
