Recognition of the Santa Clara High School Varsity Flag Football Team for League Championship

BACKGROUND

Founded in 1872, Santa Clara High School is a comprehensive, co-educational, public high school in the Santa Clara Unified School District. The Lady Bruins Varsity and Junior Varsity Flag Football Teams completed their inaugural season in the Fall of 2024 boasting a team roster of 17 members on its Varsity Team and 10 members on its Junior Varsity Team. 

 

The Varsity Team finished at the top of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL), as League Champions with a record of 8-1. The Lady Bruins also hosted their first ever Invitational Flag Tournament at Santa Clara High School, finishing in 2nd place with an overtime loss of 19-13 to Presentation High School.

 

DISCUSSION

At the March 11, 2025 City Council meeting, the City of Santa Clara will recognize the Lady Bruins Santa Clara High School Varsity Flag Football Team and their coach in honor of their inaugural season and exemplary achievements.

 

In addition to the team, the following individual students and coach are to be recognized from the Santa Clara High School Varsity Flag Football Team:

 

                     Sheila Begovic, 2nd Team All-Honors

                     Kalliana Flora, 2nd Team All-Honors

                     Angelinah DeLeon, Team’s Best Defense Player & 1st Team All-League Honors

                     Gabriella Gonzalez, Team’s Coaches Award & 1st Team All-League Honors

                     Aviana Rangel, Team’s Best Defensive Player & SCVAL League MVP Honor

                     Coach Michelle Bumbaca, 49ers Prep Coach of the Week

FISCAL IMPACT

There is no fiscal impact to the city other than staff time.
