REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

Proclaim March 2024 as Endometriosis Awareness Month

Report

BACKGROUND

In 1993, eight women started Endometriosis Awareness week. Since then, it has expanded to a full month as Endometriosis Awareness Month.

Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in other places in the body. It is a common gynecological disease, with primary symptoms including pain and infertility. It is estimated to affect more than 11 percent of women between the ages of 15 and 44. It is especially common among women in their 30s and 40s and may make it harder to get pregnant. There is no cure for endometriosis, but treatments are available for its symptoms. The City of Santa Clara joins other local efforts to bring awareness to this important month, helping those individuals who experience the condition get the diagnosis and healthcare they need.

DISCUSSION

During the March 19, 2024 City Council meeting, the City Council will proclaim March 2024 as Endometriosis Awareness Month in the City of Santa Clara. Local representatives from Democratic Activists for Women Now (DAWN) will be present to accept the proclamation.
