REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

Proclamation of National Public Works Week

Report

BACKGROUND

Since 1960, the American Public Works Association has sponsored National Public Works Week. Across North America thousands of members use this week to energize and educate the public on the importance of public works to their daily lives: planning, building, managing and operating at the heart of their local communities to improve everyday quality of life.

DISCUSSION

May 19-25, 2019, is designated as National Public Works Week. The American Public Works Association has chosen “It Starts Here” for this year’s theme. This theme represents the many facets of modern civilization that grow out of the efforts put forth by the public works professionals across North America. What starts here? Infrastructure starts with public works…Growth and innovation starts with public works…Mobility starts with public works…Security starts with public works…Healthy communities start with public works…The bottom line is that citizens’ quality of life starts with public works.

The City of Santa Clara has a dedicated staff that help maintain and improve the City on a regular basis through public works.  These efforts include maintaining roadway, building and utility infrastructure; designing and constructing numerous improvements across the City; providing electricity and water to our many residents and businesses; and offering great parks and activities for the children who are the leaders of tomorrow. The City will be hosting a celebratory event, Santa Clara Works, at City Hall on June 1, 2019, to commemorate National Public Works Week with our staff showcasing innovative projects, programs, technology, and machinery utilized for public works.

In honor of Public Works Week, the Mayor has signed a City Proclamation, proclaiming May 19-25, 2019, as Public Works Week in Santa Clara.
