REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

Proclamation of May 2025 as Historic Preservation Month - Harnessing the Power of Place

Report

BACKGROUND

Each May, communities across the country celebrate Preservation Month to promote historic places, heritage tourism, and the benefits of historic preservation.

There is no denying the role preservationists play in protecting historic spaces while meeting the needs of communities for the present and the future. This May, for Preservation Month, we’re celebrating the power of place-and the countless ways, big and small, that preservation creates. The work the Historical and Landmarks Commission does strengthens communities, breathes new life into neighborhoods, supports a healthier planet, and builds a more just and connected society

Preservation Month began as National Preservation Week in 1973, launched by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The idea, proposed by Donald T. Sheehan, aimed to connect local and state preservation efforts with national initiatives. In 2005, the celebration was expanded to the full month of May to increase awareness and engagement.

In 2024, the Historical and Landmarks Commission (HLC) introduced the “Art Meets History” banner project to honor Preservation Month. The initial launch featured 10 banners showcasing Santa Clara’s most notable historic sites. In 2025, the program grew to include three more banners, now displayed along El Camino Real and Great America Parkway.

The community is encouraged to explore these banners throughout May. They serve as a visual celebration of Santa Clara’s heritage and a reminder of the importance of preservation.

The “Art Meets History” Banner project is showcased on the City’s website on the HLC webpage. <https://www.santaclaraca.gov/our-city/government/boards-commissions/historical-landmarks-commission/art-meets-history-banner-project>
