REPORT TO COUNCIL
SUBJECT
Title
Proclamation of March as Youth Arts Month

Report
BACKGROUND
In 1961, the Art & Creative Materials Institute, Inc. developed Children's Art Month to recognize the importance of art education for development and critical thinking, expand art programs in schools, and increase community support and understanding for art education. In 1969, the celebration expanded to include secondary school students, becoming Youth Arts Month.

Since then, Youth Arts Month continues to be an annual celebration supported through the Council for Art Education to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for school art programs. Youth Arts Month provides a forum for acknowledging skills that are fostered through experience in the visual arts and encourages commitment to the arts.

DISCUSSION
