REPORT TO BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE
SUBJECT
Title
Brown Act Training (Haro)
Report
BACKGROUND
There are many local, state and federal laws protecting the democratic process as it is practiced at the municipal level. City Commissions and Committees must abide by the same regulations as the City Council.
There are several legal actions that members of City Commissions and Committees should be mindful of in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities in municipal government. Each is designed to protect fair access of the citizens to their government officials and due process (a fair hearing procedure).
Whenever a quorum (majority) of the City Council or a City Commission/Committee (or even a Subcommittee of less than a quorum) is discussing City business, it is a meeting as defined by the Brown Act.
DISCUSSION
A presentation on the Brown Act and how it pertains to this Committee will be provided by the City Attorney’s Office.
