BACKGROUND
The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has celebrated Park and Recreation Month each July since 1985 to promote strong, vibrant, and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation. The observance also recognizes more than 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals, along with hundreds of thousands of part-time, seasonal, and volunteer workers who support local, state, and community parks throughout the country.
Each July, the City of Santa Clara recognizes the contributions of park and recreation professionals and the positive impact they have on the lives of residents and communities. Parks and recreation programs, services, and facilities play an important role in supporting community health and well-being while fostering social connections, lifelong memories, and a sense of belonging.
DISCUSSION
The Santa Clara Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for the design, development, operations, and maintenance of over 350 acres of regional, community, neighborhood and mini parks, open space, community centers, recreation and aquatics facilities, joint use facilities, and athletic fields.
Parks and recreation activities are integral to communities throughout the country, promoting physical, social, emotional, and cognitive health and wellness. These programs, services, events, and facilities enrich the lives of Santa Clara residents and visitors. Furthermore, parks and recreation amenities contribute to the community's economic vitality through increased tourism, attraction and retention of businesses, enhanced quality of life, and support for safe and vibrant neighborhoods.
