Proclamation of May 17-23, 2026 as National Public Works Week

Report
BACKGROUND
Since 1960, the American Public Works Association (APWA) has sponsored National Public Works Week to celebrate how public works projects and the hard-working professionals behind them help improve our communities. Across North America, thousands of APWA members, citizens, and government agencies join together in activities, events, and ceremonies designed to pay tribute to public works personnel and to recognize the important role they play in planning, building, managing, and operating at the heart of local communities.

The APWA has chosen "Rooted in Service, Powered by Community" for this year's theme, which emphasizes how Public Works' deeply rooted service-oriented reputation has helped our communities evolve into places of purpose and possibility. This theme highlights how public works professionals are ever present - whether it's leading large scale and highly visible projects or working in support roles behind the scenes - to ensure our communities continue to be safe, sustainable, and successful.

Various departments within the City of Santa Clara work together to deliver high-quality public works projects, including Parks & Recreation, Public Works, Water and Sewer Utilities, and Silicon Valley Power. Staff in these departments work together and partner with the community to provide infrastructure services in transportation, roadway and landscape maintenance, wastewater and stormwater treatment, water and solid waste systems, parks and recreation spaces, power, emergency management and first response, right-of-way management, and maintenance of public buildings and other facilities essential to our citizens. This highly motivated City team is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in all the communities it proudly serves each day.
