REPORT TO COUNCIL
SUBJECT
Title
Recognition of the 10th Anniversary of the JW House

Report
BACKGROUND
The JW House began as the idea of JW (Jan-Willem) Knapen, a boy who battled cancer, and who wanted to help other children and families facing the same situation as he and his family. JW began to fund raise, and within a couple of years, he succeeded in raising several hundred thousand dollars from all over the world. By the time that he died in August of 2005, he knew that there was a commitment that the JW House would be built. In 2008, the JW House opened its doors for the first time.

Located on the campus of the Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center, the JW House welcomes families and individuals from area hospitals for rest and self-care during the day, or overnight, while their loved one is in the hospital. Since its grand opening, the JW House staff and volunteers have welcomed thousands to enjoy a warm meal, friendly support and comfortable beds.

DISCUSSION
On September 22, 2018, the JW House celebrated JW's 30th birthday, and the 10th anniversary of the JW House. The City Council would like to recognize the JW House for their continued commitment to support families who are facing medical crises, by offering a welcoming home close to the hospital and providing a caring and compassionate environment that inspires hope.
