COUNCIL PILLAR
Enhance Community Engagement and Transparency

BACKGROUND
Twenty years have passed since September 11, 2001, when our nation was attacked by terrorists. The events of that day have had a lasting impact across our nation and community as we remember the 2,977 people who died in the terrorist attacks that day, including those from Santa Clara County. We also remember the survivors and those who have lost loved ones, as well as those who responded to the emergency. Members of the City of Santa Clara community, including members of the Fire and Police Departments, deployed to New York City to assist in response and recovery efforts.

DISCUSSION
The events of September 11th remain a poignant reminder of the important role firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical technicians/paramedics play in our communities every day as well as in our individual lives when tragedy occurs.

Seven active and retired City of Santa Clara firefighters are taking part in the Bay to Brooklyn bike ride to honor the lives lost on September 11th. They left the Santa Clara Fire Department Training Center on August 1st and will reach New York City on September 9th in time for commemoration events. Donations gained from the ride will benefit veterans and first responders through the Gary Sinise Foundation.

The City of Santa Clara and the City Council would like to honor all the victims, survivors, and responders by recognizing, commemorating, and proclaiming the Twentieth Anniversary of the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001.
