Report

BACKGROUND
In 1995, the Santa Clara Police Department began teaching the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program. Santa Clara's D.A.R.E. program is now taught at 17 public and private schools.

D.A.R.E. is a drug abuse prevention education program designed to equip elementary school children with knowledge about drug abuse, the consequences of drug abuse, and skills for resisting peer pressure to experiment with drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

DISCUSSION
Officer Stephanie Knight has worked in the Santa Clara Police Department - Community Services Unit since August 2013 and has taught the D.A.R.E. program since August 2014. As a D.A.R.E. Officer, Officer Knight was responsible for active shooter training/drills for all schools, kindergarten presentations, career fairs, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) presentations, cyberbullying presentations, and managing the Police Department booth at all major City events. She coordinated the Wilcox High School's and the Santa Clara High School's Every 15 Minutes Programs. Over a course of 3 years, Officer Knight taught 57 ten-week 5th grade D.A.RE. classes and 8 three-week 7th grade D.A.R.E. classes.

After five years of working in the Community Services Unit, Officer Knight will be returning to the Patrol Division. In recognition of her dedication to Santa Clara's D.A.R.E. program and to Santa Clara's youth, Officer Knight will be presented with a Certificate of Special Mayoral Recognition.
