REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT
Title
Proclamation of October 18 - 24, 2026 as United Against Hate Week

Report
BACKGROUND
In recent years, communities across the nation have experienced increased division, accompanied by incidents of hate, discrimination, and intolerance. In response to a rise in expressions of hate within local communities, civic leaders launched the United Against Hate campaign in 2017 to empower residents, organizations, schools, and local governments to take action against hate and promote inclusion. The campaign serves as a call for local civic action to address hate, discrimination, and implicit bias and to foster safe, welcoming, and respectful communities.

At the December 19, 2023, City Council meeting, the City of Santa Clara adopted a Resolution (Attachment 1) supporting United Against Hate for the first time. Through the Resolution, the City affirmed its commitment to confronting injustice and intolerance and standing against racism, discrimination, and hate in all forms.

In 2026, United Against Hate Week will be observed October 18 through October 24. The campaign encourages cities, towns, schools, community organizations, and residents to come together to raise awareness, challenge bullying and bias, and promote respect and understanding.

The City of Santa Clara recognizes United Against Hate Week as an important opportunity to reaffirm its ongoing commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful community. Through continued participation in the United Against Hate movement, the City encourages all Santa Clarans to promote unity, embrace the strength of the community’s diversity, stand against hate and intolerance, and work together to build a safe and equitable community for all.

DISCUSSION
