REPORT TO COUNCIL
SUBJECT
Title
Bay 2 Brooklyn Ride Recognition
Report
DISCUSSION
On August 1, 2021, a group of active and retired firefighters from Santa Clara and San Francisco began their coast to coast cycling journey from Santa Clara to Brooklyn, New York. The 40-day ride honored the 343 firefighters that gave their life on 9/11. The ride averaged 100 miles a day, traversing across the heart of the United States, connecting with fire departments each way and then coming into New York in time for the 9/11 events. In 2008, Santa Clara Fire Department retired firefighter Darrell Sales came up with the idea after a visit to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Colorado Springs. In 2011, he set out for a trip with fellow first responders. As the City began conducting in-person hybrid meetings, the City of Santa Clara honors the event organizers with a special recognition for continuing the tradition to lead a memorial ride to honor the memory of the fallen from 9/11.
