Recognition of Washington Open Elementary School for Receiving Distinguished School Award and California Exemplary Program Award in Arts Education

BACKGROUND
The California Distinguished Schools (DS) Program honors some of California's most exemplary and inspiring public schools with outstanding education programs and practices. The California DS Program identifies eligible schools by using a multiple measures accountability system based on a school's performance and progress on the state indicators as specified on the California School Dashboard website.
The California DS Program recognizes elementary, middle, and high schools in alternate years. This year, the 2018 California DS Program recognizes California elementary schools that have made a positive impact on student outcomes and on exceptional gains in implementing academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education.
Schools that received the Distinguished School Award were also eligible to apply for a California Exemplary Program Award in Arts Education, and/or Physical Activity and Nutrition Education.
DISCUSSION
Washington Open Elementary School of the Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD) was named as a 2018 California Distinguished School.
Washington Open Elementary School was also awarded with the California Exemplary Program Award in Arts Education for their excellence in teaching, learning, and collaborating.
In recognition of these great achievements, the Mayor and Council will present a City Proclamation for each award to Principal Barbara Berman to accept on behalf of Washington Open Elementary School.
