Youth Commission 2017-18 Work Plan & Goals Update

Report
BACKGROUND
At the November 14, 2017 Youth Commission meeting, the Commission developed the 2017-18 Work Plan. The plan was created through discussion of current trends relating to the youth and teen population. The following goals were selected based on priority and community needs:
* Foster Inclusiveness in the Community
o Host an Inclusive Makerspace to provide an opportunity for young people with special needs to experience hands-on, STEM-related activities
o Participate in City-wide special events to support the Community Service Scholarship which recognizes City of Santa Clara high school juniors and seniors, with a minimum of 40 hours of community service, for their contributions in the community.
* Increase Intergenerational Awareness and Opportunities
o Host "Sunset Cinema" events throughout the term. This free, outdoor movie series provides an opportunity for families to enjoy a leisure activity in a variety of City parks and libraries.
o Host "Run Santa Clara: A Family 5K" to encourage the community to participate in an organized, fitness-based activity in Central Park, promoting a healthy lifestyle.
o Host an intergenerational discussion panel to educate and inform participants on their respective views on topics such as, technology, age, and Santa Clara past and present.
* Increase Youth Understanding and Participation in Local Government
o Top Ten List to provide City Council with current teen trends in food, entertainment, and social activities.
o Review Park Projects to provide design and use feedback on park projects via presentations, surveys, and community meetings.
o Schedule an informational meeting with City Clerk so that Youth Commissioners may learn about the process of local elections and the political structure in the City of Santa Clara.
