REPORT TO COUNCIL
SUBJECT
Title
Triton Museum of Art Update on the Austen D. Warburton Collection of Native Art and Artifacts

Report
BACKGROUND
Austen D. Warburton was one of Santa Clara's past great civic leaders and cultural philanthropists. Because of his strong commitment to the city, he was frequently referred to as "Mr. Santa Clara". Austen D. Warburton was a founding Board Member of the Triton Museum of Art, who in addition to his civic, philanthropic, and legal endeavors, was also one of the country's leading scholars on Native American art and artifacts, most of them from tribes throughout California. In a gesture to deepen the relationship between the City and the Triton Museum, he donated his entire collection to the City of Santa Clara, on the condition that the collection be maintained and preserved by the Triton Museum of Art in perpetuity. In doing so, he established one of the museum's three major holdings of California art, past and present.

DISCUSSION
Preston Metcalf, Triton Museum of Art Deputy Director, will give a brief presentation on the nature, scope, history, and purpose of this valued part of California and local history, and what it means to the cultural vitality of our city.

ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW
This is an informational report only and no action is being taken by the City Council and no environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act ("CEQA") is required.
