REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

2019 Youth Commission Community Service Scholarship

Report

BACKGROUND

In 2000, the Youth Commission recommended offering scholarships to deserving high school juniors and seniors from funds raised from Youth Commission activities for that purpose.  The Youth Commission Scholarship was created in an effort to acknowledge youth who are committed to extensive community service and finding positive solutions to issues faced by today’s young people. The scholarship is based on service, not on need or academic achievement. The scholarship funds can be used by the awardee toward academic test fees, college application costs, tuition payments or text book expenses.

DISCUSSION

Youth Commission Chair, Caroline Kloes, and Youth Commission Vice Chair, Ria Grewal, will present the 2019 Youth Commission Community Service Scholarships in the amount of $500 to Emma Mustovic and Khue Vo.

Khue Vo, a senior at Wilcox High School, is a volunteer teaching assistant at a local Vietnamese school to continue the traditions of the Vietnamese culture and language for future generations.  She has also volunteered at the Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival, with Wilcox’s Key Club, and with the Santa Clara City Library.

Emma Mustovic, a junior at Santa Clara High School, has shown a desire to learn more about other cultures as a participant with Santa Clara Sister Cities’ student exchange program with Portugal and Ireland, as well as hosting a Japanese exchange student.  In addition, she has volunteered at the Santa Clara City Library since her freshman year as part of the Teen Library Council.

FISCAL IMPACT

There is no fiscal impact to the General Fund. The Youth Commission raises funds for the annual Youth Commission Community Service Scholarship through food sales at City-wide special events, admission and registration fees for Commission-related activities, and other events.
