REPORT TO SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION

SUBJECT
Title
Senior Advisory Commission 2019-20 Work Plan and Goals

Report
BACKGROUND
At the beginning of each fiscal year, the Senior Advisory Commission develops a work plan (Plan) with goals to focus discussion and commission effort throughout the year. The Plan is created by considering the eight (8) domains of the Age-Friendly City, discussion of current trends relating to the senior population, and prioritize community needs. The Commission suggests potential goals, resources available and interest at the June meeting, then prioritizes and finalizes the work plan goals at the July meeting of the new fiscal year.

DISCUSSION
Using the results from the 2017 Senior Needs Assessment and building upon the strategies that were suggested by focus group participants and partners, the Senior Advisory Commission brainstormed potential priorities and interests of older adult residents of Santa Clara ages 50 and over, utilizing the eight (8) domains of the Age-Friendly City guidelines. The discussion included:

A. Economics and Employment
B. Community - it was recommended that the Commission consider working to educate and encourage City staff to become a Dementia Friend through DementiafriendsUSA.org.
C. Housing
D. Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
E. Transportation and Streets - it was recommended that the Commission focus on the idea of some sort of a shuttle in Santa Clara. The Commission also recommended that they continue being involved with the Pedestrian Master Plan.
F. Health, Wellness, and Nutrition
G. Social and Civic Engagement
H. Access to Community Resources and Information - it was recommended that the Commission continue being involved in the planning and implementation of the Health & Wellness fair in collaboration with the Health & Wellness Program at the Senior Center.

The 2019-20 work plan and goals will be finalized at the July 22, 2019 Senior Advisory Commission meeting.
