REPORT TO COUNCIL

SUBJECT

Title

Recognition of Police Reserve Dan Magnane

Report

BACKGROUND

The Santa Clara Police Department Reserve unit was formed in 1952. Originally, it was made up of residents who chose to volunteer in support of their Police Department at a difficult time during the Korean War.

Over the last 67 years, members of other communities have graduated from the California Peace Officer Standards Training Reserve Officer Module and have been selected for volunteer service with our Police Department.

The Police Reserves are an integral component of our Department and the work they perform is varied, including security of our city’s parks and school grounds, safekeeping at various special events (e.g. parades, 4th of July fireworks at California’s Great America, Art and Wine Festival, Halloween Haunt, etc.), participate in community programs (e.g. National Night Out), support the needs of Santa Clara University and respond to call outs for major traffic accidents, fires and/or crime scene protection.

Our current Police Reserves have chosen their own career path, such as attorneys, engineers, auto mechanics, landscapers and firefighters, and also serve as Police Reserves because they want to serve our community in a unique way. A handful are Santa Clara residents, many live in neighboring communities and one is even a Nevada resident. These ordinary citizens are “extreme volunteers” who contribute to the betterment of the Santa Clara community.

DISCUSSION

Police Chief Michael J. Sellers would like to recognize Police Reserve Dan Magnane for 42 years of service with the City of Santa Clara.

Dan Magnane was hired as a Level 2 Police Reserve in September, 1977 and acquired his Level 1 status in 1980. Police Reserve Magnane has served the Police Department as Reserve Lieutenant since 1985.

Over the course of his long Police Reserve career, Officer Magnane has made contact with thousands of residents at community events, has been involved with several noteworthy cases, was instrumental in starting multiple community programs and achieved many accolades. Examples of such include:

While conducting park patrol at Scott Lane Elementary School, caught a rapist in the act and facilitated an arrest

Identified three (3) suspects armed and fleeing the Summerwood Apartment complex, initiated a pursuit and was the primary to affect the arrest of the suspects

Instrumental in starting a program that provided stuffed animals to children involved in traumatic events (e.g. car crash, family discord, fire, etc.)

Involved in establishing Print A Child, a children’s fingerprinting identification program

Served as a bicycle officer for over eight (8) years

The 1996 Olympic Gold medal aquamaid presented Police Reserve Magnane with an Outstanding Officer for providing the team with protection at George F. Haines International Swim Center
