REPORT TO YOUTH COMMISSION
SUBJECT
Title
Census 2020 - Santa Clara Counts Presentation
Report
BACKGROUND
The City of Santa Clara is committed to ensuring a full count of all Santa Clarans. The City has been preparing for Census 2020 by participating in the Census 2020 Complete Count Steering Committee alongside representatives from other cities and the County since September 2018. The primary goal for Census 2020 is to count everyone living in the United States. The County has dedicated resources and expertise to develop a comprehensive, collaborative and ongoing effort to identify hard-to-count populations and identify the most effective ways to encourage participation in the census. The City will continue to work with local governments, community agencies, and residents to support a full count in 2020.
The official Census Day is April 1, 2020. In March 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau will begin to mail letters to every household with information on how to complete the census. In May 2020, U.S. Census field staff (called enumerators) will visit households who have not yet completed the census. The Santa Clara City Council allocated $100,000 to support Census efforts and ensure that everyone in the Santa Clara community is counted. The City Council will discuss Census 2020 efforts at a study session on January 28, 2020 at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
DISCUSSION
Representatives from City Manager's Office will provide a brief overview and opportunities for the community to be informed and involved in preparation for Census 2020.
