BACKGROUND
In September 2013, the City Council adopted a goal to "enhance community sports and recreational assets." Since then, the City of Santa Clara has prioritized rehabilitation of parks and recreation facilities that are inclusionary, environmentally sustainable, age-friendly, and provide increased measurable play value.

In 2017, the City completed a Facility Condition Assessment (Kitchell 2017) that indicated Homeridge Park Playground (Playground), built in 1962, is in "Critical" condition, and is recommended for near term/immediate replacement. The City contracted with landscape architect, Gates & Associates, to conduct community outreach, update the park site plan, and develop an age-appropriate playground design that includes all seven elements of play. On March 20, 2018, the Parks & Recreation Commission recommended Council approval of the Playground schematic design. On June 12, 2018, Council approved the schematic design.

In August 2018, GameTime announced a Playground Grant that will provide a 100% dollar value match for purchase of play systems.

DISCUSSION
The Homeridge Park Playground Rehabilitation Project will provide new playground equipment for ages 2-5 and 6-12 that include all elements of play (swinging, climbing, brachiating, sliding, balancing, spinning, and free play) at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of play. Adoption of the Resolution (Attachment 1) will authorize the City Manager to submit an application (Attachment 2) for the GameTime Matching Grant that will, if awarded, provide the City with a 100% match in the approximate amount of $90,000 to purchase playground equipment.
